The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union representing 600,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide and overseas. One of the largest agencies AFGE represents is the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). AFGE represents workers at all functions of the VA, from housekeeping staff to medical professionals. In addition, roughly 40% of AFGE members have served, or currently serve, in the military.

The American Federation of Government Employees exists to serve working level employees throughout government. We lobby for favorable civil service laws and policies, negotiate agreements that protect workers' rights and defend individuals whose rights have been violated.

Strength in numbers

Like all unions, AFGE is a democratic organization. It's not a perfect system, but it's fair and every member has a voice. The best way to improve the system is to participate. We urge all employees to join and strengthen our union.

Source of income

We are financed entirely by dues-paying members and membership is strictly VOLUNTARY. Those who have joined take pride in AFGE's accomplishments.
